Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the chemicals we supply, what they do, and when to use them.
Water Treatment Chemicals
- What is the difference between calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite?
Both are used to disinfect water and kill bacteria. Calcium hypochlorite comes in solid granules or tablets and is stronger and longer-lasting, making it good for large-scale or remote use. Sodium hypochlorite is liquid bleach, easier to add to water but with a shorter shelf life. Think of it as powder vs. liquid chlorine.
- What does potassium permanganate do to water?
It removes iron, manganese, and bad odors (like a rotten egg smell) from water. When added to water, it reacts with these impurities and turns them into particles that can be filtered out.
- What is diatomaceous earth (D.E.) used for?
It is a natural powder made from fossilized algae, used as a very fine filter material. It traps tiny particles that regular filters miss. You will find it in pool filters, food and beverage production, and industrial liquid filtration.
- What is zeolite used for?
Zeolite is a natural mineral that softens water by capturing the minerals that cause hardness (like calcium and magnesium). It is used in water softeners, pool filters, and fish farms to keep ammonia levels in check.
Cleaning, Sanitation & Solvents
- What is caustic soda used for?
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is a powerful cleaner and degreaser used in food plants, breweries, and factories to clean equipment. It is also used to make soap, adjust water pH, and process paper and textiles. It comes in flakes, liquid, and pearl form.
- Should I use IPA or ethanol for disinfection?
Both work well at 70 to 80% concentration. Use ethanol if the surface will come into contact with food or people (hand sanitizers, food equipment). Use IPA for general surfaces, electronics, and industrial cleaning where food contact is not a concern. IPA is usually cheaper.
- What is hydrogen peroxide used for?
It kills bacteria and viruses on surfaces and equipment. It is also used for bleaching and wastewater treatment. A good alternative to chlorine-based disinfectants when you do not want residual chemicals left behind.
- What is acetone used for?
Acetone is a fast-drying solvent used to clean and degrease metal and plastic parts, remove adhesives and resins, and prep surfaces before painting or bonding. Common in electronics, printing, and manufacturing.
- What is methanol (methyl alcohol) used for?
Methanol is an industrial solvent used in fuel blending, biodiesel production, and as a raw material in chemical manufacturing. Important: methanol is toxic and should never be used in any application involving food or human contact.
Acids & Industrial Chemicals
- What is hydrochloric acid (HCl) used for?
It removes rust and scale from metal surfaces before coating or galvanizing, a process called pickling. It is also used to descale boilers and industrial equipment, and to adjust pH in water treatment.
- What is sulfuric acid used for?
One of the most widely used industrial chemicals. It is used in car battery manufacturing, metal treatment, fertilizer production, and pH adjustment. It is extremely corrosive and always requires proper handling equipment.
- What is nitric acid used for?
Used to clean and passivate stainless steel surfaces, etch metals, and in fertilizer and chemical manufacturing. It is extremely corrosive and requires strict safety precautions.
Food, Agriculture & General Use
- What types of salt does Kemichem supply?
We supply iodized salt and solar salt (sodium chloride). Iodized salt is for food processing and food service. Solar salt is used for water softener regeneration, food preservation, brining, and agricultural applications.
- What is sodium metabisulfite used for?
It preserves food and prevents browning. Commonly used in dried fruits, seafood, juices, and wine. Also used to remove chlorine from water before discharge and as a reducing agent in textile manufacturing.
- What is soda ash (sodium carbonate) used for?
Soda ash is used in glass manufacturing, water softening, pool pH adjustment, and detergent production. It raises the pH of water, making it less acidic.
- What is sulfur powder used for?
Used in agriculture as a fungicide to protect crops from mildew and mites, and to lower soil pH for plants that prefer acidic conditions. Also used in rubber manufacturing and chemical production.
